Computer Use vs. Hands-On Learning

In the age of AI (Artificial Intelligence), the internet, online data collection and virtual learning, it is tempting to assume that the future of education will be solely based in technology. Certainly, models have emerged that take these tools into account, and there are already schools that incorporate AI into their curriculums and eliminate teachers in lieu of ‘monitors’ whose sole job is to provide students with human contact.

It seems inevitable that change is coming, but will it transform education for the better? Given current research by social psychologists there is evidence the use of technology (and in particular, social media) can negatively affect the psychological development of children, particularly in the early teen years. Below we’ve comprised a pro/con list comparing computer learning with a more old-fashioned ‘hands-on’ approach.

Pros of Tech in the Curriculum

  • Ease of data tracking and keeping records. Due to the detailed nature of most learning programs today, reports can be automatically recorded for teachers and parents to refer to and make instant note of a student’s progress.
  • Developing AI models are able to adjust learning to keep track of the individual student’s pace, backtracking to review or fast tracking as necessary to prevent frustration and stagnation.
  • Availability of information. Given the almost unlimited supply of information on the internet (or via AI), lessons can be augmented substantially with facts, pictures, videos, lessons, or activities with the touch of a button. Even human teachers can improve or enhance lessons either at home or in the classroom.
  • Technology is becoming increasingly important in order to live, work, and acquire information in the modern age. To deprive a child of all technology, including in the teenage years, could result in significant career handicaps in the future.

Cons of Tech in the Curriculum

  • Recent research suggests that excessive screen time, especially on social media, can have profoundly negative effects on the social development of children.
  • The time spent in front of screens is time spent away from direct social interaction.
  • Too much tech exposure. Too much screen time may impact the social development of children and teens, making it harder to develop face-to-face communication skills.
  • One-dimensional learning. When skills are learned solely through technology, the multi-dimensional aspect of education is lost (for ex, concrete skills, hands-on learning, and in-person experiences).
  • Potential impact on gross and fine motor skill development. When children do not have to manipulate fine tools such as pencils or directly convey information to concrete mediums (for ex, paper or textured surfaces), motor skills may be lost or delayed.
  • Potential impact on real-world problem-solving ability. While it is possible nowadays to conduct meetings and conversations online, it is still necessary to solve problems in real time, with real people, and in real places. The concrete nature of early learning makes it necessary to conduct manual problem-solving on-site.
  • Potential impact on healthy vision. Some studies indicate that too much screen time in early life can affect the vision of children causing eye fatigue, dry eyes, and increased risk for nearsightedness.
  • Loss of creativity. Children tend to be more creative when moving and collaborating with real people in real situations.
  • Too much computer time in general can foster mental and physical laziness among children, parents, and teachers, affecting their mental and physical health.

Given the evolving negatives of modern technology use: in particular among children below the age of sixteen, more and more parents and schools are beginning to question its use. Childhood is a time to formulate critical human skills, whether they are physical, social, or intellectual. Because of this, it is wise to exercise caution when placing a child in front of a screen despite the advantages technology offers. While a balance ought to be found at home and school for every child, research increasingly indicates that the use of tech devices should be limited for children below the age of sixteen.
